Your Built-In Manipulative Device: Your MIND!

We all have those moments where our inner voice turns into a drama queen, blowing things out of proportion or convincing us we're the worst at everything. These, my friends, are cognitive distortions - unhelpful thought patterns that can distort our perception of reality and hold us back from reaching our full potential.

You give permission to your mind, it plays you like a fool!

-Rima Hilal-

Think of your mind as a powerful tool. Used correctly, it can help you achieve amazing things. But just like any tool, if you don't understand its limitations and potential biases, it can actually work against you.

Here are the 3 most common mind distortions that can sabotage your wellbeing:

1. All-or-Nothing Thinking: Seeing things in extremes, like "If I don't get this promotion, I'm a complete failure." This black-and-white thinking leaves no room for nuance and can fuel anxiety and self-doubt.

2. Overgeneralization: Taking one negative experience and applying it to everything, like "I messed up that presentation, I'm always bad at public speaking." This can lead to a negative self-image and hinder your willingness to try new things.

3. Mind-Reading: Assuming you know what others are thinking, often in a negative light, like "They must think I'm incompetent." This can damage relationships and fuel unnecessary worry.

Mostly, mind distortions rely on assumptions. There is no evidence that what you think is true, it is just your mind telling you this because of the subconscious conditioning that comes from past experiences and traumas.

So, what can you do?

By understanding these distortions, you can challenge their accuracy and reframe your thoughts in a more balanced and helpful way. This is where mindfulness- based cognitive therapy (MCBT) comes in. It can equip you with the tools to:

  • Identify your distortions

  • Challenge their negative biases

  • Develop more realistic and empowering thought patterns
